Project Title: Provision of Essential Treatment in Critical Illness

Project Description: Critical Illness is any acute, life-threatening, reversible condition. In critical illness, effective, timely care can save lives. Care for critical illness is often sophisticated and expensive in dedicated intensive care units. The essentials treatments that are mostly restricted to care just in emergency departments of ICUs. Advanced critical care, including mechanical ventilation, can be difficult or impossible to provide in all hospitals. Instead, lifesaving essential treatments may be the solution. Care for critical illness is often sophisticated and expensive in dedicated intensive care units. The essentials treatments that are mostly restricted to care just in emergency departments of ICUs. Advanced critical care, including mechanical ventilation, can be difficult or impossible to provide in all hospitals. Instead, lifesaving essential treatments may be the solution. Provision of Essential Treatment in Critical Illness (POETIC) is a one-year duration project which aims to understand the current situation of critical care in Tanzania in order to determine the best strategies for improving care. This involves gathering information about the resources for critical care in hospitals understanding the perceptions of health workers and other stakeholders and looking at the policies and plans for critical care provision. The project includes a literature review and secondary analyses of existing datasets, interviews of health workers and other stakeholders, group discussion, online survey, and hospital walkthrough.
